The institute is presently headed by Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, an academic researcher with more than twenty-five years of experience in molecular biology and biomedicine. He comes to NUCSER with his vast research knowledge in the area of rare genetic disease modeling, particularly those that are caused by defects in ribosome biogenesis (ribosomopathies), in the zebrafish system. Dr Anirban is also involved in developing non-invasive and alternative DNA-based molecular tools for detection of pathogenic variations in cancer.
Dr. Anirban is the co-founder The Consortium of Rare Genetic and Bone Marrow Disorders Indian Network@NitteDU (N-CRG.BMD|IN), a first of its kind network of clinicians and researchers where collaboration at multiple levels will contribute to gaining a better understanding of these syndromes, leading to improved clinical therapies and outcomes for the patients. He has also established The Cancer Gene Database@NitteDU that provides comprehensive information about the genetic and somatic variations in human cancer, which can be disseminated to researchers and clinicians working on various aspects of cancer biology including identification of novel biomarkers, deciphering molecular mechanisms and development of targeted/precision therapy.
Dr. Anirban has had an illustrious research career, having completed his PhD from The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University, Japan with a MEXT fellowship and postdoc at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, Japan with the prestigious JSPS fellowship. Prior to joining Nitte (Deemed to be University), Dr. Anirban has served as a senior research associate at the Laboratoire de Biologie Moleculaire Eucaryote (LBME), UMR CNRS 5099, Toulouse, France.
He is a recipient of several awards and recognitions, most recent being the Best Researcher of NUCSER, 2020 and Best Researcher of Nitte (Deemed to be University), 2018. He has over 80 research publications in reputed International journals, 2 book chapters, 3 patents and 2 books as editor, to his credit. He is also the recipient of several extramural research projects as principal investigator from premiere funding agencies like ICMR, DST-SERB, DST-JSPS, DST-BELSPO, MEXT.
Dr. Anirban has trained many postgraduate students in his career so far and several of them are pursuing doctoral programs abroad. As a professor at the Division of Molecular Genetics and Cancer, he is leading a team of four PhD students working on diverse areas including cancer genetics, disease modelling, gene editing and transgenesis. A total of five students have completed their PhD under him so far.
Dr. Anirban has been associated with NUCSER since 2014 when he joined the organization as an Associate Professor. Dr. Anirban has been instrumental in developing active collaborations with universities in Japan and Europe, which resulted in many bilateral research projects and publications. At NUCSER, Dr. Anirban would be leading a group of highly competent faculty with expertise in diverse areas of biological science and proven track record in research.
NUCSER is a state-of-the-art institute involved in cutting-edge research in the field of biomedicine. Over the last ten years, the institute has seen a phenomenal growth in research and development, having obtained extramural funding worth several crores from premiere organisations in India and abroad. The core principles of NUCSER are based on three E’s- Educate, Empower and Excel in Science. At NUCSER, it is a constant endeavour to execute the core principles through a holistic approach with ample opportunities for novel and innovative research in the field of one health.
At present, NUCSER offers one undergraduate and six postgraduate programs in addition to PhD in specialized topics under the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Students admitted to NUCSER have the opportunity to work in well-equipped modern laboratories and get the practical training that would prepare them to take up career in the health science sector. Under his dynamic, perceptive, and intelligent leadership, NUCSER continues to strive towards research and academic excellence in the field of biomedicine.
